Her Story

Dr. Susan Munayi is a seasoned educationist, licensed counseling psychologist, certified professional mediator, trainer of trainers (ToT), and peer educator. With over 30 years of experience in education and two decades in frontline counseling and community outreach, she has dedicated her life to restoring dignity, healing trauma, and fostering resilience—particularly among women, children, and youth in vulnerable communities.

The idea for the organization was born out of a crisis. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Susan witnessed a heartbreaking surge in the number of adolescent girls—referred to as “COVID mothers”—who had fallen victim to exploitation, abuse, and neglect. Their stories highlighted not only the immediate consequences of the pandemic but also the long-standing social vulnerabilities and gaps in psychosocial support across marginalized communities.

In response, Dr. Susan founded DSMF as a structured and sustainable solution to these pressing needs. What began as a compassionate response to a moment of crisis has grown into a transformative movement dedicated to dignity, healing, and empowerment.

Since its inception, DSMF has become a beacon of hope for those who have been silenced, overlooked, or left behind. Guided by Dr. Susan’s deep understanding of trauma-informed care and community-led development, the organization works at the intersection of mental health, education, and social justice. Through tailored programs, advocacy, and capacity-building, DSMF creates safe spaces for healing, learning, and growth.

Today, DSMF continues to evolve in response to the changing needs of the communities it serves. Rooted in empathy and driven by evidence-based practices, the organization empowers individuals not only to recover, but to lead. Whether through psychosocial support, life skills training, or community mobilization, DSMF is committed to nurturing resilience and restoring hope—one life, one story, and one community at a time.

Working towards establishing a better society

The Dr. Susan Munayi Foundation was born out of a grassroots call to action to address the urgent gender and health disparities affecting rural women and girls in Western Kenya. With a leadership team comprising community health champions, educators, and gender rights advocates, DSMF is uniquely positioned to deliver integrated, inclusive, and transformative programs that elevate the voices of women and reduce vulnerabilities in underserved regions.

“As a medic, I often focus on physical health, but volunteering with DSMF showed me how closely health and emotional wellbeing are connected. Being part of this work has strengthened my compassion and reminded me that care goes beyond treatment, it is about presence and humanity.”

“Through my camera, I have witnessed both pain and incredible resilience. Volunteering with DSMF taught me that photography is not about images alone, but about dignity and respect. Every story we capture is handled with care, and that matters deeply to me.

“ Working alongside the DSMF team has reminded me why I became a social worker. We meet people at their most vulnerable moments, and the foundation creates space for healing without judgment. This work is challenging, but it is honest and deeply meaningful.”
